Black Mountains Overlook (MP 342.2)

You’re staring at the Black Mountain Range, home to six of the ten tallest peaks in the eastern U.S., including Mount Mitchell at 6,684 feet. The view has great depth: rolling foreground ridges give way to the hulking Blacks and the South Toe River valley, with dramatic long shadows when the sun is low. Expect lush greens in summer, fiery color in fall, and occasional snow-dusted peaks in winter.

It’s an easy, in-and-out pullout with a small parking area. There are no facilities (no restrooms, tables, or services), so think of it as a photogenic pause, not a picnic spot. The overlook can be breezy and cooler than lower elevations.

Western exposure means flattering evening light and often spectacular sunsets. Mornings tend to bring clearer air for long-range views. The layered ridgelines and shifting light make this a dependable place for dramatic shots.

You’re unlikely to see large animals from here, but keep an eye out for birds riding thermals and the varied flora that thrives on these high, cool slopes.
