Green Knob Overlook (MP 350.4)

Overview

Perched at MP 350.4 about five miles north of Mount Mitchell State Park, Green Knob Overlook serves up a long gaze over the Catawba River country. Face the railing and you’re looking out across stacked blue ridgelines; turn around and the namesake Green Knob rises behind you.

What You'll See

On clear days, expect layered ridges, valleys carved by the Catawba headwaters, and tiny flashes of Lake James in the distance, with the southern end of Linville Gorge on the horizon. Vegetation has crept up over the years, so the view isn’t quite as open as it once was—head to the north side of the parking area for the best angle.

Hike to the Fire Tower

A short but steep path climbs from just north of the overlook to the Green Knob fire lookout (built 1931, listed on the National Register). From the Parkway, it gains roughly 340 feet in about a half‑mile and can be rocky and slick. The cab is usually closed, but the stairs typically provide outstanding views over the Black Mountains and beyond. This overlook area also connects to rugged local routes like Snook’s Nose and Lost Cove Ridge.

Know Before You Go

• There are no services here—no restrooms, no potable water, and no picnic tables. Bring what you need.
• The trailhead is easy to miss; it sits about 100 yards north along the Parkway from the overlook.
• Trails in this area are steep and rocky; sturdy shoes (and poles if you use them) make the climb safer and more enjoyable.

Is It Worth the Stop?

Yes—especially if you want a classic valley panorama plus the option to bag a short, punchy hike to a historic lookout. If you’re after the most open, sweeping vista right from the car, the partial overgrowth keeps this one a notch below the Parkway’s very best.

• Crowds: Expect more people on fall weekends during leaf season; weekdays are mellower.
• Weather: Wind and temps can change fast at elevation—pack a layer.
