Start at Mount Mitchell Summit Parking and follow the signed white-triangle Balsam Nature Loop. The route uses the paved summit-area approach to reach the Mount Mitchell Trail junction, then descends on the unpaved Balsam Nature Trail before climbing back through the summit parking-area connection to close the loop. The complete loop is about 0.75 miles; North Carolina State Parks rounds it to 0.7 mile on its trail table. Allow about 30 minutes, with extra time for interpretive signs and uneven footing.
