Licklog Gap Overlook (MP 435.7)

• Room to breathe: the paved lot is larger than most overlooks along this stretch, so pulling in and out is easy.
• Peaceful vibe: it’s typically less busy than the big-name viewpoints, which makes sunrise especially good here.

Expect layered vistas toward the Cowee/Nantahala country, hardwood forests, and moodier scenes on misty mornings. In spring and summer, rhododendron and laurel frame the edges; in fall, the color show can be excellent.

NPS signage uses “Licklog Ridge.” The name nods to the old practice of setting salt in notched logs to attract livestock—an echo of the area’s grazing history.

A short connector here ties into the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. It’s a convenient place to stretch your legs on a bite-size stroll or start a longer ramble.

You might spot white-tailed deer or wild turkeys in the mornings and evenings; hawks and seasonal songbirds work the ridgelines. Butterflies are common in summer. Black bear sightings are possible but uncommon—keep your distance if you’re lucky enough to see one.
