White Rock Falls

Overview

Tucked between mileposts 18.5 and 20, White Rock Falls is a serene, 30-foot cascade in a boulder-lined gorge. It’s not the biggest waterfall on the Parkway, but it wins on ambiance: shaded forest, burbling creek, and a natural pool that’s perfect for a summer cooldown. Expect smaller cascades below the main drop and occasional mountain-view outcrops along the way.

Getting There & Route Options

• Start from either The Slacks Overlook (MP 20) or White Rock Gap Parking Area (MP 18.5). From the lot, you’ll cross the Parkway to pick up the yellow-blazed White Rock Falls Trail; look for the kiosk map at the parking area.
• Common out-and-back to the falls: roughly 2.2–3.4 miles round trip depending on your starting point, moderate overall.
• Full through-hike between trailheads: about 2.5 miles one-way.
• Loop option (often paired with Slacks Overlook Trail): about 4.4–4.9 miles with around 896 feet of total gain.
• Expect a rock-hopping creek crossing, some gentle switchbacks, and a short, easy scramble near the falls.

What You’ll See

• The main 30-foot cascade plus smaller waterfalls downstream.
• A cool, clear wading pool that’s a magnet in warm weather.
• Mixed hardwood forest, remnants of old hemlock groves, and spring/summer wildflowers.
• Intermittent Blue Ridge views, especially on the climb back toward the Parkway.

Wildlife

Typical Blue Ridge forest wildlife shows up here—songbirds, deer, and small mammals. In warm months, ticks and biting insects are common. Hikers have also reported seeing timber rattlers and even a copperhead on sunny rock outcrops, so keep your eyes on where you step and give all wildlife space.

• Summer: Shady hiking and that refreshing wading pool.
• Fall: Foliage adds extra pop to the cascades and viewpoints.
• Weekends can draw steady traffic; early morning or weekdays are quieter.

• There are no restrooms, water, or trash services—pack in/out everything.
• Trail can be muddy and slick after rain; sturdy, grippy footwear helps.
• Trekking poles are handy for the creek crossing.
• Leashed dogs are allowed.

Underrated and unhurried, White Rock Falls is a choose-your-distance waterfall hike with enough variety—forest, water, and viewpoints—to keep everyone happy. Go for the quiet woods and cooling pool, not a thundering waterfall, and you’ll leave grinning.
