Sharp Top Trail

The mapped foot corridor runs about 1.5 miles from the store-area trailhead to the summit; because this is an out-and-back, the visitor distance is 3.0 miles round trip and the route is stored once rather than duplicated on the return. The climb gains roughly 1,300 feet. Allow about 2 hours up and 1 hour down for the full hike, plus time for summit rocks, views, and photos.

The forested climb becomes increasingly rocky, with stone steps, uneven footing, and boulders near the top. A stone shelter and open summit outcrops frame the views. Buzzard’s Roost is a separate short spur near the upper trail; it adds mileage when visited and is not part of the core Sharp Top line.

Park at the Peaks of Otter/Sharp Top Store area across the Blue Ridge Parkway from the visitor-center and Abbott Lake area; the foot trail starts behind the store. Parking can fill on fair weekends and during fall color, so an early start helps. Drinking water and restrooms at the Sharp Top Store are seasonal. A concessionaire shuttle operates seasonally for ticketed passengers and drops hikers within about 0.25 miles of the summit.

This is a steep, strenuous climb with about 1,300 feet of gain over 1.5 miles. Rock steps and uneven terrain can be hard on knees, and wet, icy, or snowy conditions require extra care and suitable traction. Do not hike the Sharp Top Bus Road: it is closed to hiking, biking, and private vehicles except for the shuttle. Carry enough water and follow Leave No Trace practices.
