Park at the Peaks of Otter/Sharp Top Store lot across from the Visitor Center at Abbott Lake; the trail starts behind the store. Arrive early as lots fill on busy days.
Steep, rocky steps and uneven footing for 1,300 feet of gain; ice possible in winter. Water and restrooms at the store are seasonal. Do not hike the shuttle road—use the foot trail only.
Why this trail
If you like your views earned, Sharp Top delivers. From the Peaks of Otter area on the Blue Ridge Parkway, this out-and-back climbs roughly 1,300 feet in just 1.5 miles to a boulder-studded summit at 3,875 feet. Expect a sustained grade, lots of stone steps, and uneven footing. The payoff is a true 360-degree panorama over the Peaks of Otter, the Blue Ridge, the Shenandoah Valley, and the Alleghenies. It’s one of Virginia’s most popular summit hikes for a reason.
Route and stats
Start behind the Sharp Top Store (across from the Peaks of Otter Visitor Center/Abbott Lake). It’s 3.0 miles round trip on a well-signed, forested path that steepens and gets rockier as you near the top. Plan on about 2–3 hours round trip for most hikers; budget extra time to scramble around the summit rocks and take photos.
What you’ll see
The forested climb is pleasant, but the character here is rocky—expect rugged steps and boulders. Near the summit, you’ll pass a picturesque stone shelter and emerge onto open outcrops with huge views. For a quieter feel, detour to the short Buzzard’s Roost spur near the top for big rocks and vistas away from the main crowd.
Crowd factor and logistics
This is a very popular hike, especially on fair weekends and during fall color, and parking can fill. Arrive early. Seasonal restrooms and drinking water are available at the Sharp Top Store; outside that window, come self-sufficient. A seasonal shuttle can drop you about 0.25 miles below the summit if you want to shorten the climb, but note that the shuttle road itself is closed to hiking and other uses—stick to the foot trail.
Difficulty and conditions
It’s steep and strenuous, with persistent climbing and many rock steps that can be tough on knees. Traction can be slick when wet, and winter brings ice and snow—check conditions and consider traction devices when appropriate. Sturdy footwear is a must; trekking poles help on the descent.

Best time to hike
Spring brings wildflowers and comfortable temps. Summer is lush but humid—and busy. Fall foliage is spectacular and also the most crowded. Winter offers open views but can be icy; pick clear, calm days. For lighting and fewer people, early morning is your friend.
Bonus context
Sharp Top is one of the three Peaks of Otter (with Flat Top and Harkening Hill) and was once thought to be Virginia’s highest peak—part of why it’s long been a destination viewpoint.
