Braemar Castle

Braemar Castle is a fortified 1628 tower house on the A93 just northeast of Braemar. The visit covers ten furnished rooms and grounds with a restored kitchen garden, a woodland trail and a heather-thatched folly. It's worth more than a quick photo stop; allow about an hour when the castle is open, and longer if you want to wander outside.

From the signed car park, an accessible Timeline Trail leads through the grounds and curtain wall to the Welcome Cabin and castle entrance. It traces key events in the castle's past, so you start getting the story before you reach the rooms. The route continues to the Fog House, where the operator recommends the view toward Invercauld Estate.

The 2nd Earl of Mar built the castle in 1628 as a strategically placed hunting lodge. After the Jacobite risings it became a redcoat garrison, then later a high-society retreat with royal connections. The local community stepped in to save the building and its collection in 2007; A £1.6 million conservation and grounds project began in 2019.

The ten rooms show the comfortable family home made by Alwyne Farquharson, 16th Laird of Invercauld, and Frances Oldham. They were the first residents to open the castle to visitors, in 1961. The vivid pink interiors connect to Frances's friendship with fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli and her signature “shocking pink.” A room-by-room digital audio guide adds detail about the rooms and collection; visitors also value the guides when a live tour is running.

The 1930s kitchen garden has been brought back with heritage fruit and vegetable varieties. The 19th-century Fog House is a small folly with a heather thatched roof and a spiral path; it gives you a different outlook across the surrounding estate. A woodland trail winds among Scots pines and young native trees, so the grounds have enough to do even if you don't spend long inside.

The grounds are open year-round, while the castle interior opens seasonally; check the current calendar before making the trip specifically for the rooms. Use the designated car park signed off the A93; overnight parking isn't permitted. There are accessible toilets and a souvenir shop in the Welcome Cabin, but no on-site catering. Braemar is close for cafés, shops and takeaway food. The operator describes an access-for-all path through the grounds to the castle and Fog House; it doesn't establish whether the historic interior is accessible.
