Chapel Brae car park, at the top of Chapel Brae in Braemar. From the Linn of Dee road, take the second left at the village’s west-end roundabout and keep right up the hill; the car park is on the left at the top. A height barrier is reported. Capacity and fees were not confirmed.

Safety

Short moderate climbs, uneven narrow track and mud after rain. Expect two small stream crossings on the return. At the plantation, follow the path beside the fence rather than entering through its gate and stile.

Morrone Birkwood Trail is a 2.75-mile (4.5 km) loop from Chapel Brae car park above Braemar. Allow about two hours. It climbs through lichen-draped birchwood and juniper, opens onto heather slopes with views over Braemar and the River Dee toward the Cairngorms, then circles back beside the plantation. The mostly smooth, narrow earth path has short moderate climbs and uneven patches; it can be muddy after rain, so expect a steadier walk than a level village stroll.

From the car park at the top of Chapel Brae, return to the road and turn left past Braemar Pond. Where the road becomes a track, take the left branch signed for Morrone Viewpoint and keep left at the next junction. The track winds uphill through birches and passes Woodhill. At the next fork, take the path that climbs directly left to the viewpoint indicator and bench.

Birchwood and open viewsThe old birches are heavily draped in lichen, with juniper below them.

The old birches are heavily draped in lichen, with juniper below them. The bench gives the first good look back through the trunks to Braemar and the Dee valley. Just beyond it, turn right at the signed junction; when the main track drops right, take the left, more level path through the birches. After the gate and fence, the trees spread out and the view widens. In clear weather, look for Ben Macdui and Derry Cairngorm above the fields and forest along the Dee. From the bench, framing the valley between birch trunks keeps the woodland in the foreground.

As the path reaches the plantation, ignore its gate and stile and follow the path along the near side of the fence. The route curves back over open moorland, where scattered birches replace the thicker wood. Cross two small streams, then keep left of the fence at the next gate rather than entering the plantation. A path junction and one more gate lead back to the outward track and Chapel Brae. Dogs are allowed under Scotland’s access rules; keep them under control and use a lead when needed around livestock or wildlife.
