The Fife Arms is a Victorian coaching inn turned luxury hotel on Mar Road in central Braemar, known for its Scottish references and contemporary art. For day visitors, the clearest public-facing experience is The Flying Stag, the hotel’s pub, which welcomes locals as well as guests. Book for a meal rather than assuming the whole building is open to explore; public access to the lounges and wider art collection hasn’t been confirmed.

The pub serves local beers and Scottish whiskies alongside classic dishes such as fish and chips, pies, burgers and roasts. A suspended stag with ptarmigan wings hangs inside, made by artist James Prosek as a meeting of the Dee Valley’s forest deer and a bird of the high Cairngorms. You can get a taste of the hotel without booking a room, but check directly before planning around current hours or walk-in access.

An inn on the royal routeThe hotel opened in 1856.

The hotel opened in 1856. Around 1872, Queen Victoria regularly stopped here to change horses on journeys to Balmoral, Mar Lodge and Linn of Dee; Braemar residents gathered to watch her pass. That connection puts the inn on the old route between the village and the royal estates.

After Livingston and Margaret Macdonald took over in 1897, architect Alexander Marshall Mackenzie enlarged the hotel over the next nine years, adding a floor, bay windows and a four-storey west wing. The long stone frontage and red-trimmed gables are the building’s clearest exterior features. From Mar Road, step back for the full run of gables, then look closer for the arched entrances and heraldic panel.

During the First World War, Margaret Macdonald ran the hotel while her husband served and sheltered four wounded Belgian soldiers. After the war, land across the road was given over to Braemar War Memorial, unveiled in 1921 by the Duchess of Fife. The hotel was later commandeered in the Second World War and housed army units, including the newly formed Commando Corps.

Reopened as a contemporary hotelIwan and Manuela Wirth bought the Fife Arms in 2014.

Iwan and Manuela Wirth bought the Fife Arms in 2014. It reopened in December 2018 after four years of restoration, carrying its old coaching-inn role into a modern luxury hotel built around Scottish heritage and contemporary art. If the collection is your main reason for coming, arrange access before you go; a general public tour wasn’t confirmed.
