A quick stop for an old bridgeCarrbridge Old Packhorse Bridge is a ruined, single-arch humpback stone bridge over the River…

Carrbridge Old Packhorse Bridge is a ruined, single-arch humpback stone bridge over the River Dulnain in the village. Built in 1717, it’s a worthwhile short stop for the old arch and its unusual story. The historic span is fenced off; take it in from the street-level viewpoint by the modern road bridge rather than trying to cross it.

Two good viewsThe modern bridge gives you a broad look across the old arch.

The modern bridge gives you a broad look across the old arch. For a lower angle by the river, follow the wooden steps down to the viewing platform. They have 26 steps and no ramp, so the street-level viewpoint is the better choice if stairs are difficult. Village parking is nearby, followed by a short walk to the viewing spots.

The route behind “Coffin Bridge”Sir Alexander Grant commissioned the bridge to carry pedestrians, horses and livestock across…

Sir Alexander Grant commissioned the bridge to carry pedestrians, horses and livestock across the Dulnain, including funeral parties travelling to Duthil Churchyard. That burial route is why locals also call it the Coffin Bridge.

What the flood left behindThe bridge took six months to build and cost £100.

The bridge took six months to build and cost £100. A separate toll crossing for wheeled traffic followed in 1791 at the site of today’s road bridge. In 1829, the “muckle spate” washed away the old bridge’s parapets, but its arch survived beside the newer crossing.
