“A muddy footprint with five toes beside a river could be an otter’s. Inland otters do much of their hunting at night, so their signs can be easier to find than the animals themselves.”

Invernahavon is a family-run caravan and tent campsite at Glentruim, about 250 yards off the A9 south of Newtonmore. Use it as an overnight stop or a settled base for the Highlands: mountain, woodland and river scenery are close by. It’s a working campsite rather than a sightseeing stop in its own right.

There are hardstanding and grass pitches with electric hook-up, plus a separate tent area without hook-up. Campers have toilets and showers, separate accessible facilities, laundry and drying machines, dishwashing sinks and chemical-toilet disposal. Touring and camping are seasonal, while five lodges are offered year-round. The on-site shop does not stock groceries, so pick those up in Newtonmore before you arrive.

A green, quiet settingRoomy pitches and open views over the surrounding hills are the draw.

Roomy pitches and open views over the surrounding hills are the draw. Red squirrels and red deer are often seen around the site, though wildlife is never guaranteed. The A9 is close enough for traffic noise to reach some tent pitches at night, so light sleepers may prefer a spot farther from the road.
