The Wildcat Centre

Overview

The Wildcat Centre is Newtonmore’s playful nerve center: part visitor hub, part launchpad for the village-wide Wildcat Experience. Instead of live animals, you’re chasing down life-size painted models—132 of them—tucked around gardens, shopfronts, and unexpected corners. It’s community art turned into an outdoor game, and it’s a joy if you like a bit of quirk with your strolls.

How the Wildcat Experience works

• Pick up a Trackpack at the Centre (£10): full‑colour brochure, map, and pen in a showerproof bag.
• Head out into the village to find as many of the 132 painted wildcats as you can, marking them off as you go.
• Certificates and prizes kick in once you hit certain totals, so keep score.

Wildcat Trail vs Wildcat Experience

They’re related but different. The Experience is the treasure hunt for model wildcats around the village. The Wildcat Trail is a walking route around Newtonmore with its own illustrated booklet you can buy at the Centre. You won’t find most of the model cats just by walking the Trail—plan the hunt separately.

What you’ll see

Expect a creative, ever-changing tour of Newtonmore: hand-painted wildcats in clever hiding spots, local architecture and shopfronts, and slices of everyday village life. It’s highly photogenic and especially fun with kids or a competitive group of friends.

Who will love it

Families, casual walkers, and anyone who enjoys gamified exploring. If you came for a wildlife sanctuary, this isn’t that—but as a community-led art adventure, it’s a standout.

Planning and logistics

• Start at the Centre on Main Street to buy the Trackpack and get pointers. If it’s closed, Trackpacks are also sold at various businesses in the village.
• The hunt can take several hours if you’re aiming high; dress for the weather and bring water/snacks.
• Restrooms are available at the Centre when open.

Best time to visit

• Weekdays and mornings are calmer; weekends and school holidays get busier with families.
• Aim for morning or late-afternoon light if you’re photographing the cats.
• If you’re visiting on a day the Centre is closed, plan to grab a Trackpack from one of the alternate outlets and start from the High Street.

Wildlife

No live wildcats here—the “wildlife” is artistic. For nature watching, pair this with local walks; the Centre’s trail materials will point you in the right direction.
