Parking

Start at the roadside junction of Horse Canyon Road and the Fortress Arch footpath. No developed parking area is marked there; vehicle access uses the permit-controlled 4WD road. Confirm legal stopping space, current road status, and permits with the Needles Visitor Center.

Safety

Horse Canyon Road is a rough backcountry 4WD route; the park warns that deep sand, water, and quicksand may occur and that access can be impassable. Beyond the mapped viewpoint, the cairned continuation reaches a cliff base and the opening requires an exposed scramble. Pets are prohibited on hiking trails and in the backcountry.

Hiking Fortress Arch Trail

Fortress Arch Trail is a 1-mile out-and-back from Horse Canyon Road to a south-side view of the broad sandstone span. The mapped footpath is about 0.5 mile each way; the published half-mile figure appears to describe the outward leg. Allow about an hour for the rocky climb, a look at the arch, and the return. The arch stays hidden until near the end, so this is a short, specific destination hike rather than a broad canyon walk.

Follow the side canyonThe path heads west along the bottom of a minor side canyon.

The path heads west along the bottom of a minor side canyon. After about five minutes it reaches a fork; stay on the southern branch. From there the route climbs over rocky ground for roughly another 15 minutes before the arch comes into view from its south side. This is a rough, backcountry footpath, not a developed walk.

Where to stopThe mapped route ends at the viewpoint.

The mapped route ends at the viewpoint. A rough cairned continuation goes beyond it toward the cliff below the opening, but getting into the arch involves an exposed scramble and a steep obstacle. That climb is outside the route described here; the view from the end of the mapped path is the sensible turnaround for this short hike.

Reaching the trailheadThe trail starts at a junction on Horse Canyon Road in the Needles backcountry.

The trail starts at a junction on Horse Canyon Road in the Needles backcountry. The district map shows no developed parking symbol at the junction. Reaching it means using the permit-controlled 4WD road, which can have deep sand, water, and quicksand and may be impassable. Confirm current road access and permit requirements with the Needles Visitor Center before setting out. Pets are not allowed on Canyonlands hiking trails or in the backcountry.
