Orange Cliffs Overlook is a roadside viewpoint near the end of Island in the Sky’s main road, looking west across the Green River canyon toward the orange sandstone of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. It’s an easy stop with a different angle from the park’s better-known viewpoints. Keep it as a backup when Grand View Point’s parking is full, or make time for the west-facing light near sunset.
The Orange Cliffs are in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, across the Green River from Canyonlands. The view also reaches toward The Maze district to the south, so the broad canyon country in front of you crosses park boundaries even though you’re standing in Island in the Sky.
The Green River has cut through sedimentary layers laid down nearly 300 million years ago, exposing a long stretch of the region’s geologic history. From the overlook, the river canyon helps you read the landscape as more than a row of mesas: the visible cliffs are the layers the river has been cutting into.
