This is the quick-hit rim walk that overdelivers. The White Rim Overlook Trail is an out-and-back, 1.8 miles round trip with roughly 150–173 feet of total elevation change. It starts from the White Rim Overlook Picnic Area along Grand View Point Road (just past Buck Canyon Overlook) and follows a mellow path across desert crust and slickrock, with cairns guiding you to a dramatic, unfenced promontory.

What You’ll See

From the overlook, you get sweeping, near-300° views into Monument Basin and down to the Colorado River more than a thousand feet below. The namesake White Rim sandstone bench girdles the canyons, while the La Sal Mountains float on the horizon. Along the way, expect classic Colorado Plateau slickrock underfoot and hardy desert vegetation like scattered junipers framing those big vistas.

Trail Character

The route begins as a simple gravel path before transitioning to red dirt and slickrock. It’s well marked by cairns and generally easy for most hikers, but it does edge a sheer rim with real exposure. The grade is gentle—expect a slight descent on the way out and an equally gentle climb back.

Crowds and Vibe

Compared to the marquee roadside overlooks in Island in the Sky, this one usually feels quieter, especially outside peak hours. That said, it’s popular for a reason—you may still encounter steady company during busy seasons.

Best Time to Hike

Year-round access makes this a flexible option. For the best experience, aim for sunrise or late afternoon: cooler temps, softer light for photography, and fewer people. Summer afternoons can be brutally hot—go early or late and bring plenty of water and sun protection. In winter, snow or ice can find the slickrock; traction helps.

Practical Tips

Parking is limited at the picnic area; arrive early or off-peak, and follow any posted guidance about which spaces are reserved for picnicking. The overlook is unfenced—watch your footing near the edge and keep kids close. No dogs are allowed on this trail. Navigation is straightforward thanks to cairns, but stay alert, especially where the path meanders near the rim. Standard park entrance fees apply.
