The Harvest Scene is one of the most celebrated Barrier Canyon Style pictograph panels, tucked deep in the Maze District. Expect a true backcountry experience: no crowds, no facilities, and a big payoff if you’re prepared for the effort. The panel’s ghostly anthropomorphic figures, animals, and plant motifs are ancient and evocative—and subtle. Think contemplative more than flashy.
Getting There
Access starts from Chimney Rock Camp via Doll House Road; stay on that road for 17.1 miles to reach the camp’s east end, where there’s a parking area and a major trailhead. Trails here aren’t signed—look for strings of cairns heading off on each side of Chimney Rock that mark the loop used to reach Pictograph Fork and the panel. High‑clearance 4x4 is the norm, and roads can become impassable when wet.

The prize is the Harvest Scene panel: large, intricate, and ancient Barrier Canyon Style pictographs painted on a sandstone wall. The figures are faded, so take your time and let your eyes adjust. The approach itself is classic Maze—two beautiful canyons, big country vistas, and landmarks like the Chocolate Drops along the way. Solitude is part of the draw; you may not see another party.
Best Time to Visit
Go early or under cloud cover to see the pictographs at their best—direct sun washes them out. Heat builds quickly here, so an early start helps both visibility and comfort. Crowds aren’t really a thing in this corner of the park, even on weekends.
Know Before You Go
This route is cairn‑guided and unsigned; navigation skills matter. Carry ample water and be fully self‑sufficient—there are no services at the site. Overnight trips in the Maze require proper backcountry permits. Treat the panel with utmost care: don’t touch the rock art, and keep packs and gear well clear.
