Marconi Station Site

Paved paths connect the parking area to the overlook, and the site is listed as wheelchair accessible. Interpretive panels, a memorial marker and an overlook pavilion bring the story into view, with picnic tables and seasonal restrooms nearby. There’s no beach access from this stop; go to Marconi Beach separately if you want to reach the sand. No food service is listed here, so plan your meal elsewhere. South Wellfleet became part of Marconi’s early network with stations at Poldhu in England and Glace Bay in Nova Scotia. In January 1903, the station carried public messages between Europe and America, including messages from Theodore Roosevelt and King Edward VII, translated into Morse code. Later antenna towers reached 210 feet. Kerosene engines generated 2,200 volts, which a Tesla transformer stepped up for longwave transmission; the spark could be heard four miles downwind.

Storms damaged the first antenna supports, and four wooden towers replaced them. The station shut in 1917 during World War I as newer technology displaced spark-gap transmission, then was dismantled in 1920 after cliff erosion threatened its eastern towers. The cliff was retreating about three feet a year, and most of the former site has since disappeared into the Atlantic. That’s why the memorial marker and bluff view matter more than any surviving machinery here.
