Overview

This is a short-but-memorable 1.2‑mile loop that dives into one of Cape Cod’s rarest ecosystems. Expect a gentle downhill through oak–pine forest, a long, winding boardwalk through the cool, dim Atlantic white cedar swamp, then a sandy return along historic “Wireless Road.” It’s signed as moderate: the distance is easy, but there are stairs and a soft‑sand stretch that add some effort. Plan on 30–60 minutes.

What you’ll see

The star is the swamp itself—towering Atlantic white cedars rising above carpets of ferns and moss, with red maple and sweet pepperbush in the mix. It’s shaded, quiet, and noticeably cooler than the uplands. You’ll likely hear plenty of songbirds, and this damp habitat suits frogs and salamanders. The boardwalk delivers close‑up views without trampling sensitive ground.

Route feel and flow

You’ll descend from the trailhead into mature woods before the ~0.6‑mile boardwalk section. After the swamp, the loop climbs onto “Wireless Road,” a sandy path tied to the nearby Marconi Wireless Station history. Expect about a half‑mile of soft sand here—beautiful, but it can feel longer than the mileage suggests. Wayfinding is straightforward overall, though a few spots feel lightly marked—downloading a map helps. The boardwalk can be damp and slick after rain, and there are no handrails.

Best times to hike

Shade makes this a pleasant option on warm days, but mosquitoes spike in warmer months—bring repellent. For a quieter walk and nicer light on the boardwalk, aim for early morning or late afternoon; midday tends to be busier. The loop is enjoyable year‑round when conditions are dry.

Logistics

Park at the Marconi Site Parking Area (195 Marconi Station Road) and follow signs to the trail. Seasonal restrooms are by the trailhead. Per seashore rules, pets are not allowed on this trail. The park is open daily from 6:00 AM to midnight; no reservation is needed, and while the trail itself is free, standard park fees may apply at certain locations. This trail is not wheelchair or stroller accessible due to stairs and sandy sections.
