Herring Cove Beach

Herring Cove Beach is a developed, west-facing beach in Province Lands at the tip of Provincetown, and the only Cape Cod National Seashore beach on Cape Cod Bay. The water is generally gentler and a little warmer than at the Atlantic-facing beaches. Come for a calmer swim, a walk on the sand, or the park's best-known sunset. Check the tide before a long shoreline walk; high water can squeeze the beach down to a narrower strip.

Take Province Lands Road from Route 6, just beyond Provincetown's center. Two parking lots have several access points; a fairly level, fenced path crosses a recovering dune before it reaches the open shore. The park lists the beach as wheelchair accessible and has offered beach wheelchairs seasonally, so check availability if you need one. The bathhouse area has restrooms, changing rooms and showers, with picnic tables nearby. A concession serves beach snacks and meals when in season; its schedule and menu vary.

Dogs are allowed only on the signed northwestern stretch of beach. Shorebird closures can shift with nesting conditions, so follow the signs at the entrance.

The open sand faces west, putting the sunset over the water. Race Point Lighthouse is visible to the north, small on the distant shoreline. For a photo, include the curving surf or some foreground sand to show the beach's shape, then turn north for the lighthouse across the bay. You can watch for whales from shore; visitors also sometimes spot seals offshore.

The Province Lands Bicycle Trail passes through the beach area and links toward Race Point Beach, Province Lands Visitor Center and Beech Forest. The park calls it the first bike trail built in a national park, and its route climbs over dunes, making it a more demanding ride than a flat beach path.

Herring Cove was a busy maritime spot in the 19th century, with docks and piers along the shore. In the mid-20th century, it was also known as New Beach after a state highway made the tip of the Cape easier to reach. The older Herring Cove name returned when the National Seashore took over in 1962; local histories connect it to the fishing shore.

Cape Cod's sand was left by glaciers and later reshaped by waves and currents into beaches, spits and dunes. That shifting supply of sand is part of the setting here: the shore changes shape, and the beach can feel very different as the tide rises and falls.
