Use the museum parking lot

The museum’s free lot is just past the building and can accommodate RVs and trailers. The smaller lot opposite the museum is for beach access, so use the lot beyond the building instead; overnight parking is not allowed. A paved sidewalk leads to automatic doors, two wheelchairs are available to borrow, and most audiovisual displays have captions. Only ADA-defined service animals are allowed inside.

Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is a North Carolina maritime history museum at the south end of Hatteras Island, close to the Hatteras–Ocracoke ferry docks. Its name refers to the thousands of shipwrecks off North Carolina, but the galleries tell a much wider story: lighthouses, navigation, boatbuilding, rescue crews, wartime U-boats and life on the Outer Banks all share space here. It makes an easy indoor stop between beach time and a ferry trip, and gives some context to the waters that shape the rest of a visit.

The original Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Fresnel lens is the standout: 20 feet tall and dating to 1852. Nearby, a sculpture shows U.S. Life-Saving Service surfmen in a Monomoy rescue boat, while a touchscreen map opens stories tied to shipwreck locations along the North Carolina coast. Other exhibits cover colonial exploration, piracy, Civil War battles, both world wars, boatbuilding and navigation. The renovated museum reopened in 2024, with artifacts and photographs alongside touchscreens, film, holographic historical figures and hands-on displays. The lens and rescue-boat scene make the scale of the maritime story easier to picture; the map connects it to real stretches of coastline.

Take it at your own paceThe visit is self-guided, and the museum recommends allowing at least an hour.
