Cathedral Cove is a signed overlook on Anacapa Island that puts the park’s marine world front and center. One nautical mile of ocean around each island is part of the national park, and beyond that you’re looking across the national marine sanctuary. It’s a dramatic, wind-in-your-face viewpoint without the crowds or clutter.

Best time to visit

Aim for morning or late afternoon for softer light and better photographs; midday tends to be the busiest and the harshest light. Seas and wind can dictate comfort at the rim and on the ride over—calmer days make everything better. If you plan to explore the water (diving, snorkeling, or kayaking), conditions can vary; the cove can be sheltered, but currents and cold water are common.

Getting There

It’s an easy stroll on Anacapa’s signed trail network—about 0.6 miles round trip from the island’s visitor area—to reach the overlook. There are no roads on Anacapa; everyone arrives by boat. There are no services at Cathedral Cove itself, so arrive prepared and pack out everything.
