Parking and approach

From Mosier, follow US 30 east; the pullout is on your left after about 3.1 miles. The small parking area also serves as the start of the Memaloose Hills route, which draws extra visitors for spring wildflowers. If there is no legal space, keep driving: roadside overflow creates a safety problem on this highway. There is no toilet at the trailhead.

Memaloose Overlook is a small roadside viewpoint on the Historic Columbia River Highway (US 30), about 3.1 miles east of Mosier. It looks across the Columbia to Memaloose Island. You can take in the view from the pullout without a walk, making this a worthwhile quick pause on the old highway. It is distinct from nearby Memaloose State Park, the campground.

The island was a traditional burial place for Indigenous people of the Columbia River Gorge. Oregon State Parks notes a granite monument there marking the grave of Victor Trevitt. From the roadside, look for the island set in the river; a wide frame also takes in the opposite shore and its cliffs.
