The Washington Shore Visitor Center is a two-building complex on the Washington side of Bonneville Dam: an Orientation Building and an adjacent Fish Viewing Building. It is a worthwhile stop if you want to understand how a hydroelectric dam works and how migrating fish get past it. Exhibits cover power generation, Columbia River geology, regional natural and cultural history, and fish passage. Pick up the self-guided booklet at the Orientation Building desk; it connects the displays to the powerhouse and the fish ladder.

A viewing area looks 85 feet down onto the powerhouse floor and its generators, bringing the scale of the machinery into focus. In the fish-viewing room, underwater windows look into the fish ladder. Fish move upstream through a series of pools, but what appears depends on migration, so do not expect a guaranteed species or a steady stream. Fish viewing is seasonal, generally from late April to mid-November. Bonneville's first powerhouse, spillway and navigation lock were completed in 1938; the second powerhouse followed in 1981. That timeline gives the exhibits a direct link to the equipment you can see.

Approach from Washington State Route 14 via Dam Access Road. Bradford Island Visitor Center is a separate facility on the Oregon side, so check the destination name before crossing the dam complex. There is on-site parking, an indoor restroom by the fish-viewing area, and an elevator to all levels. Paved paths connect the outdoor viewing areas and include inclines up to 7.5%; two accessible spaces are about 200 feet from the entrance. Give yourself time for both buildings rather than treating this as only a quick pullout.
