More about Bradford Island Visitor Center

A working river projectBradford Island Visitor Center is an interpretive center on the Oregon side of Bonneville Lock…

Bradford Island Visitor Center is an interpretive center on the Oregon side of Bonneville Lock and Dam, set between the first powerhouse and spillway. Architect William D. Reid designed the concrete building, completed in 1975, with a long horizontal band of windows looking across the Columbia River Gorge. Inside, exhibits cover local history, hydropower, and the life cycle of fish moving upriver; a lower fish-viewing room makes the center's focus on fish passage tangible. Come for a close look at how a working dam fits into the river, not for a long walk through a natural landscape.

Look into the fish ladderStart in the lower fish-viewing room.

Start in the lower fish-viewing room. Windows let you watch salmon and lamprey move upstream through the fish ladder, turning migration from an exhibit topic into something happening just beyond the glass. Painted graphics remain in the room, giving the fish-viewing area its own character. Afterward, take in the hydropower and local-history displays, then look out through the broad window band: the Gorge is part of the setting, not just a backdrop to the machinery. Sea lions sometimes feed near the dam on fish, but treat a sighting as a bonus rather than a plan. This is a useful stop if you want the systems around the river to make sense together: power generation, navigation, fish passage, and the landscape they share.

The island's longer storyThe dam is only one layer of Bradford Island's history.

The dam is only one layer of Bradford Island's history. Lewis and Clark camped here on their return in 1806. The Bonneville project later removed the Cascades obstacle to navigation and created a 48-mile navigable channel. Construction happened in stages: the first powerhouse, spillway, and original navigation lock were completed in 1938; the whole dam was completed in 1943; and the second powerhouse followed in 1981. The visitor center opened in 1975, between those phases. Those dates make more sense when you see Bonneville as a changing group of power and navigation works rather than one structure finished all at once.

Getting onto Bradford IslandThe drive is part of the visit.

The drive is part of the visit. From I-84 Exit 40, follow Dam Road; after the guard station, cross the navigation lock and first powerhouse, then turn left at the Bradford Island Recreation Area sign. Seeing the powerhouses and lock on the way in gives the exhibits a real setting. Parking and flush restrooms serve the center. Don't count on a meal here, so plan food elsewhere before or after; books and gifts give you something small to browse. The stop is a good fit for visitors curious about fish, engineering, or the Columbia's history, while anyone looking mainly for a waterfall walk or an outdoor viewpoint should spend their time elsewhere in the Gorge.
