Hiking Herman Creek Trail #406

A long route to the PCTHerman Creek Trail 406 is an 11.

Herman Creek Trail #406 is an 11.2-mile point-to-point hike from the west end of Herman Creek Campground to its junction with the Pacific Crest Trail. The Forest Service lists 3,835 feet of elevation gain. The route climbs into Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness through old-growth fir, cedar and hemlock, with mossy creeks and waterfalls along the way. Its far end is a remote trail junction, not a car park, so plan an overnight, a continuation or another way back before setting out. Returning on #406 would make it a 22.4-mile outing.

From the campground, follow the early forks carefully: switchbacks cross a power-line access road before a signed fork. Take the left, east branch to Herman Camp. The old road soon narrows to trail again, with side creeks, mossy banks and a tall waterfall. Stay right on #406 at the Casey Creek Trail junction. A shorter out-and-back turns around in the Casey Creek area at about 8 miles round trip and 2,000 feet of climbing; that is a different visitor itinerary, not the length of the PCT-bound trail.

Higher into the wildernessAbove the Casey Creek junction, 406 continues about six miles to the PCT.

Above the Casey Creek junction, #406 continues about six miles to the PCT. The climb passes a steep meadow with views across Herman Creek toward Benson Plateau, old-growth Douglas-firs at Casey Creek Camp, and spring-fed cedar around Big Cedar Swamp. East Fork is usually a ford. Waterfalls have more flow in wetter months and may dwindle by late summer. At the tall creek waterfall, include a patch of mossy bank and the stream in the frame to give the falling water a sense of scale.

Allow 8–10 hours one way for the full route; its sustained climb and remote finish make it a hard backcountry walk. The trailhead is at the campground’s west end, where the small lot fits about 10–12 cars and has a vault toilet but no potable water. A valid recreation pass is required at the trailhead, and a free wilderness permit is self-issued at the boundary. Dogs are allowed on leash. Bikes and motor vehicles are prohibited in the wilderness. The PCT continues 1.6 miles to Wahtum Lake, but that segment is beyond this route.
