Amenities and the approach

Expect flush and vault toilets, showers, drinking water, and an on-site campground host. The entrance is on SD-87, also called Needles Highway. Large RVs and vehicles towing campers should approach from SD-89 north of Custer, from US-16A, instead; Needles Highway has low, narrow tunnels, and the campground isn’t suitable for RVs over 27 feet.

“You're approaching the Little Devils Tower trailhead. This is a good choice if you want a hands-on climb to a bare granite summit, with Cathedral Spires close by and Black Elk Peak across the ridge.”

Sylvan Lake Campground is a 39-site campground on SD-87, about a quarter-mile south of Sylvan Lake. At 6,200 feet, it’s Custer State Park’s highest campground, and the lake is a short stroll away. It’s a handy base for time at the water or a day on Needles Highway. The tradeoff is close spacing: sites sit near one another, and campers sometimes hear traffic from the highway.

Match the site to your setupThe campground has electric sites as well as tent-only sites without hookups.

The campground has electric sites as well as tent-only sites without hookups. It’s a compact layout: large tents and RVs over 27 feet are a poor fit. Several walk-in tent sites sit uphill and can feel more private, but campers report an uphill gear carry. If a level pad or an easy unload matters, take care choosing a site; layouts and access vary from spot to spot.
