More about National Park Visitor Centre, Postbridge

A useful first stopNational Park Visitor Centre, Postbridge is a single-storey museum and information hub just off…

National Park Visitor Centre, Postbridge is a single-storey museum and information hub just off the B3212 in the village, between Moretonhampstead and Two Bridges. It is small enough to fit into a Dartmoor day without taking it over, but its exhibitions do more than point out walks: they connect local archaeology to the moor around you. I’d stop here before a visit to Whitehorse Hill or a walk around Postbridge, especially if you like knowing what you’re looking at. The Postbridge Clapper Bridge is a short walk up the road, so the centre pairs well with that landmark; count them as two different stops, not one attraction.

Whitehorse Hill, brought indoorsWhitehorse Hill is the story to look for.

Whitehorse Hill is the story to look for. In 2011, a stone slipped from a peat-covered burial cist and exposed an Early Bronze Age grave that had survived because the waterlogged, oxygen-poor peat limited decay. The burial dates to about 1730–1600 BC and held the cremated remains of a young adult, probably a woman, wrapped in brown bear fur and fastened with a copper-alloy pin. More than 200 beads came from the grave. It’s an unusually personal piece of Dartmoor history, not just another display of stone tools. The centre shows replicas; the original objects are held at The Box in Plymouth. A hologram tells the burial story, with maps and displays linking the finds to the wider landscape.

More than a museum roomThe rest of the exhibition gives a quick route through prehistoric Dartmoor: stone tools,…

The rest of the exhibition gives a quick route through prehistoric Dartmoor: stone tools, Bronze Age objects, a reconstructed hut circle and a cast of a trackway marked by animal prints. Give it a little time instead of treating the building as somewhere to grab a map and leave. The front desk and small gift shop are useful too: ask about walks, pick up maps or books, and get local context from staff. There’s also a History Hunters trail around Postbridge. Tramper hire from the centre provides access to a Bellever Forest route with broad moor views. Those options make Postbridge a useful starting point for a day outside, even if you only stay indoors briefly.

Getting in and aroundThe centre sits just off the B3212; follow the brown signs into the car park.

The centre sits just off the B3212; follow the brown signs into the car park. Parking is directly in front on tarmac, with three Blue Badge spaces, although the approach across the lot has a 7% cross-slope. There is no marked drop-off, but cars can pull close to the entrance to let passengers out. Access inside is step-free and level, and the toilet block includes an adapted cubicle with baby-changing facilities. The centre’s hours change with the season, so check the current schedule before setting out. I couldn’t verify a café here, so plan food separately; the confirmed on-site shop is for maps and gifts, and EV charging points are outside.
