More about St Michael de Rupe Church

A church on the skylineSt Michael de Rupe is a small stone parish church on the summit of Brent Tor in West Devon.

St Michael de Rupe is a small stone parish church on the summit of Brent Tor in West Devon. The church stands 1,110 feet above sea level, inside the earthworks of an Iron Age hillfort. On a clear day, the churchyard looks out over Dartmoor, Plymouth Sound, the Tamar Valley and Bodmin Moor. The setting is half the visit: a compact building on a high tor, with open country all around.

It's a good stop if you want a short walk with a destination at the top. The dedicated car park is below the tor; the parish estimates about 10 minutes on foot and warns the climb is steep. Treat it as a brief hill walk, not a church you can pop into from the road.

Small church, deep historyThe church is just 37 feet long and 14½ feet wide, small enough that its setting can loom…

The church is just 37 feet long and 14½ feet wide, small enough that its setting can loom larger than the building. Robert Giffard founded a church here around 1130 as a chantry chapel; the present structure was enlarged in the 13th and 14th centuries. The summit's fort predates it by more than a thousand years, dated roughly 150 BC–AD 50. Together, they give the visit an unusual scale: a tiny medieval church within an even older hilltop site.

Look at the south side of the tower for the 1694 stone sundial. Its winged figure has a half-imp, half-angel look, a memorable detail on the plain stone exterior.

Plan for the climb and the viewThe approach is steep, and information about step-free access conflicts.

The approach is steep, and information about step-free access conflicts. If you need a level route, check directly with the church before setting off. If getting inside is important, check whether the church will be open before you climb.

For a photo, step back far enough to include both the church and the rocky rise; that makes the hilltop setting clear. From the churchyard, turn around for the broad view across the moor and toward the coast. Clear weather brings the farthest views; moorland fog can quickly hide them.
