“A common crossbill's beak looks almost broken: its tips cross instead of meeting. That odd shape lets the bird pry apart a conifer cone's scales and pull out the seeds.”

Harford Bridge Holiday Park is a family-run camping and holiday park on the River Tavy, just outside Tavistock on Dartmoor’s western edge. Book it for a stay rather than a day of sightseeing: its draw is a riverside setting with a broad mix of places to sleep, from tent and touring pitches to caravans, pods, a Shepherd’s Hut, Tipis and a self-catering cottage.

For guests, the four-acre reserve gives dogs room to roam off lead; there’s also a hard tennis court, play area and indoor games room. The Williamson family has run the park since 1985, and an orchard was planted in 2021 within a section managed as wildflower meadow.

Overnight visitors have heated showers, family-use wet rooms, disabled facilities, laundry and washing-up areas. A small shop stocks essentials and groceries as well as hot and cold drinks and ice cream in the main camping season. This is a fee-charging holiday park, and public day access to the facilities or riverbank isn’t clear; check before planning it as a casual stop. It makes most sense as a base for Dartmoor walks or the West Devon Cycle Way.
