“There's a watchmaker's grave beside St Petrock's Church in Lydford, but the most interesting part is indoors. George Routleigh died in eighteen oh two.”

This is a private campsite on the edge of Lydford, with hardstanding and grass pitches for caravans, motorhomes, campervans, folding campers and tents. The separate tent area looks out across Dartmoor, and the site is a useful base for Lydford Gorge, the Granite Way, Lydford Castle and the village. Choose it for a few quiet nights, not as a quick roadside stop.

The layout is three fields divided by hedgerows and trees, with level or gently sloping pitches and views towards the tors. Facilities are unusually complete for a small base: toilets and showers, an accessible wet room, dishwashing and laundry. The shop covers the practical gaps with branded groceries, local ice cream, camping supplies and an off-licence. Wi-Fi is available as a paid extra. Dogs are welcome, up to three per unit, with a roughly 1 km on-site walk.

Lydford Gorge is a short walk away, and the nearby village gives you a pub option without moving the vehicle. A bus stop about 100 metres from the site links with Tavistock, Plymouth, Okehampton and Barnstaple. If you’re towing, use the site’s recommended final approach rather than blindly following sat-nav: some nearby roads are unsuitable for caravans. The main tradeoff is surface and layout rather than scenery; shingle can be awkward for a mobility scooter, and some hookup points are a distance from the pitch. The site is seasonal, so check the current operating dates before booking.
