Trail guide
Wistman's Wood Walk is about 4 km (2.5 miles) round trip, an out-and-back from Wistman's Wood Car Park to the viewpoint beside the wood and back the same way. It's a brief moorland approach rather than a circuit or a route through the trees. The draw is the sight of gnarled oaks and moss-covered granite boulders tucked into the West Dart Valley. If the wood is your main reason for coming, this is the direct version; longer days that add Longaford Tor or Crockern Tor are separate walks, not extra miles hidden in this route.
Wistman's Wood is a National Nature Reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, owned by the Duchy of Cornwall and managed by Natural England. Its ancient oak trunks twist around granite boulders, with mosses and lichens clinging to both. The rare horsehair lichen, Bryoria smithii, is recorded at only two sites in Britain. On the higher ground northeast of the wood, more than a hundred prehistoric huts survive as ruined walls among the moorland plants; they belong to the wider valley story, not the short walk’s finish. To protect that fragile ground, stay on the public path and don't enter the wood or scramble over its boulders. The restriction makes this a viewpoint walk: enjoy the oakwood from outside rather than treating its edge as a trailhead into it. Keep some of the open valley in a photo with the wood; a close crop of trunks loses the setting that makes this place distinctive.
From the small car park, follow the broad track past the right of Crockern Farmhouse. The route rises gently toward the valley view, then changes character at a gateway: the path narrows and becomes rough, muddy and wet for the rest of the walk. The footing, more than a steep climb, is what makes the final section slower. At the viewpoint the wood sits in the West Dart Valley, and you turn around along the same line. Moorland weather can change quickly; the open landscape feels different when cloud and rain move through, even on a walk this short.
