Maclaren River Lodge

Maclaren River Lodge is a remote cabin lodge and roadhouse at Mile 42, in the Maclaren River and glacier country. It is a place to plan around for an overnight, a meal or a service stop on a long gravel drive, rather than a quick roadside pullout. It is especially useful if you want to break up the highway or stay for an outing.

The on-site restaurant serves house-made food with local ingredients, and homemade bread is a recurring favorite. The operator lists summer gasoline and limited tire, mechanical and welding repairs; winter supplies are for snowmachines. These services are seasonal, so check what is available before relying on fuel or help out here.

The lodge describes its cabins as rustic and set by a lake. It also advertises airboat tours, canoe trips and glacier hikes, which give you a reason to stay longer than a meal stop. Ask about dates and arrangements before building a day around a specific outing.

The lodge has served hunters, trappers and prospectors for about half a century. The Denali Highway itself once provided the only road access to Denali National Park, before the Parks Highway was completed in the early 1970s. This stop still makes most sense as part of a longer, self-reliant drive through remote country.

From Paxson, the lodge is 42 highway miles in; from the Parks Highway end, it is 92 miles in. The first 20 miles from Paxson and the first three from the Parks Highway end are paved; most of the 135-mile route is gravel. The highway generally closes to through traffic from October into mid-May. In winter, the lodge lists access by snowmobile, dog team or air, so a normal drive-in visit is seasonal.
