Park at Mountain Vista Rest Area on Denali Park Road (around Mile 13). In summer, use the free Savage River Shuttle if parking is full.
Windy and colder than the entrance—pack layers. Check road conditions in spring/fall for weather closures. Wildlife is common; follow bear safety and keep distance. No pets or bikes on the loop. Denali views only on clear days.
A short, smooth loop from the Mountain Vista Rest Area (about Mile 13 on Denali Park Road) that trades effort for scenery. Expect open views toward the Savage River Valley and Mount Healy, with a real chance—on clear days—for a far‑off look at Denali. Along the way, interpretive signs explain the forest‑to‑tundra transition you’re walking through.
Why hike it
If you want a quick payoff without committing half a day, this delivers. The views are wide, the path is broad and mostly flat, and the setting feels wild despite the easy access. On a bluebird day, this is one of the better roadside spots to glimpse Denali from over 80 miles away.
Need to know
Parking can fill fast in summer; the free Savage River Shuttle stops here and is the stress‑free move. It’s often windier and cooler here than at the park entrance—bring layers. Wildlife wanders through, so keep distance and brush up on bear safety. Denali plays coy; don’t be surprised if clouds hide it even when the rest of the sky looks decent.
Trail details
This is a 0.6‑mile total loop with negligible elevation change on compacted gravel. It’s broadly accessible and easy to follow. A short spur can add a little extra walking down toward the Savage River. Restrooms and picnic tables are at the trailhead.
