A Gold Tramway's Second Life“The New Precipice Walk above the Mawddach follows a tramway, not a path first made for walkers. It served the Foel Ispri mines, where companies sought lead, zinc and gold in the late nineteenth century.”

Trail guide
This is a there-and-back walk. The mapped corridor runs 0.863 km one way from the Foel Ispri access to the route end, so the full visitor distance including the retraced return is 1.07 miles (1.73 km). Allow around an hour, which leaves time to stop, sit and take in the view rather than rush the turnaround.
Start beside Foel Ispri and follow the named footway east along the hillside, tracing the line of the old tramway that once served the abandoned Foel gold mine. The path is mostly open, with grass and gravel underfoot, occasional benches and picnic seating, and a broad outlook over the Mawddach estuary towards Dolgellau, Cadair Idris and the surrounding hills. At the route end viewpoint you turn and retrace the same path back to the car park.
Rated 4/10. The distance is short, but the surface is uneven in places, the path rises and falls, and it narrows and roughens as it goes on. Expect mud after rain and a few gates along the way. The first section is described as wheelchair friendly, though that does not extend to the whole route, so treat the easier start as a separate short outing if wheels or unsteady footing are a factor.
The walk sits on an open hillside with exposed edges and drop-offs in places and very little shelter. Keep children and dogs close to the inside of the path. On clear days the estuary view is the whole point of coming, and the low, angled light of morning and late afternoon reads best across the valley. In wind or low cloud there is nothing to duck behind and little to see.
Use the small Foel Ispri Car Park near Llanelltyd, Dolgellau (SH 698 200). The final approach is a narrow, steep lane up from Taicynhaeaf with limited passing places, so drive it slowly and be ready to reverse. Spaces are few. Please leave those nearest the route for visitors who need the accessible opening section. Access is by established public footpath.
Dogs are welcome on the public footpath under close control, on a short lead near livestock and wildlife, in line with current national park guidance.
The older Precipice Walk, the circular around Llyn Cynwch, is the better choice for a fuller 3.3-mile day. New Precipice is the shorter outing you take for the high viewpoint and the estuary panorama.
