Overview

About Llyn Cwellyn

Why stop

  • Short accessible boardwalk with broad mountain views
  • A calmer lakeside stop beside the Snowdon Ranger route

Heads up

  • Small car park fills with summit walkers
  • Wind and rain can quickly flatten the views
Llyn Cwellyn is a long reservoir on the western side of Yr Wyddfa, set between Mynydd Mawr and the mountain's quieter western approaches. It is a good place to slow down and see the landscape at a more human scale: water, steep hills, rough pasture, and the old route toward the summit all meet here.

Before you go

Best time to go

For the calmest feel and the best chance of reflections, arrive early in the day or later in the afternoon. Clear weather gives the strongest mountain outline, while low cloud can make the lake feel atmospheric but may hide the peaks. Weekday mornings are the least pressured time for the small car park. If you are only coming for the boardwalk, allow roughly half an hour; if you are walking the Snowdon Ranger Path, treat this as the start of a full mountain day and check conditions before setting out.

More about Llyn Cwellyn

The easy lakeside optionThe short Llyn Cwellyn Boardwalk makes this more than a drive-by view.

The short Llyn Cwellyn Boardwalk makes this more than a drive-by view. It is a level, accessible loop of about 0.25 km with places to pause and look across the water. The views change depending on direction, with Mynydd Mawr on one side and Yr Wyddfa's western slopes on the other. This is the right choice if you want a scenic stop without committing to a mountain walk.

The same car park is the start of the Snowdon Ranger Path, a hard and strenuous route to the summit. That makes the lake unusually useful for mixed groups: some people can enjoy the boardwalk while others set off for a full day in the hills. The path is not a gentle lakeside extension, so do not confuse the short boardwalk with the demanding summit route.

Water, wildlife, and practical detailsLlyn Cwellyn is a reservoir that supplies drinking water in the region and is known for wild…

Llyn Cwellyn is a reservoir that supplies drinking water in the region and is known for wild brown trout and char. Fishing is a specialist activity and requires the appropriate permissions and licence. Treat the shore as open mountain country: weather can turn quickly, and the water and surrounding slopes are exposed.

The most useful arrival point is Llyn Cwellyn Car Park on the A4085, beside the Snowdon Ranger start. Spaces are limited because summit walkers use it, and it is also served by the Sherpa'r Wyddfa bus network. A toilet is available at the car park, but it is basic portable provision rather than a full visitor facility. There is no café or visitor centre here, so bring food, water, and suitable clothing.
