Overview

About Dolbadarn Castle

Why stop

  • Round tower and slate ruins with a classic Llanberis Pass backdrop

Heads up

  • Muddy approach and steep, uneven steps in wet weather
A sturdy round tower, roughly 50 feet (15.2 metres) high, stands on a high rock at the edge of the National Park boundary with Llyn Padarn on one side and the Llanberis Pass climbing away on the other. This is a native Welsh castle rather than one of the later coastal fortresses, and the difference shows in the stonework: the curtain walls were built from unmortared slate slabs, while the great tower is far more solid. It reads as a compact historic stop rather than a large castle complex, and the setting does most of the work.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to visit

  • The site is open all year in reasonable daylight hours, so timing is mostly about weather and light.
  • Dry, clear conditions make both the approach and the tower stairs much easier and safer.
  • Early morning or the last hours of daylight give the warmest, most raking light across the lake and the pass, and low sun brings out the texture of the slate walls.
  • In wind, heavy rain or low cloud the climb is less rewarding and the tracks are at their worst; on those days it works well as a quick stop rather than a lingering visit.

Getting there and the approach

The castle sits about 0.8 km (0.5 mile) southeast of Llanberis on the A4086, with a local-authority pay-and-display car park across the road. From parking, allow roughly a 10 to 25 minute walk along farm tracks, and note the honest tradeoffs:

Wear footwear with real grip and expect to watch your feet, especially after rain.

  • The tracks can be muddy, uneven and slippery in poor weather.
  • The route becomes steeper near the castle.
  • The final section uses a natural path and historic stone at the foot of the castle steps, with a handrail on the main entrance steps.

  • Low ruins of the rest of the castle, including slate-slab curtain walling, spread across the rocky knoll.

Access to the top of the tower is by a single ruinous staircase that is narrow and awkward, and the interior space is small. Guardrails are in place, and there are posted warnings about falls and falling masonry. Take the steps slowly, keep hold where handrails exist, and do not climb over fixed installations or onto walls. If you are uneasy on tight, worn stairs, or carrying small children, the views from the base and the rock outside are still excellent without going up.

The castle was probably built by Llywelyn ap Iorwerth, Llywelyn the Great, in the late 12th or early 13th century. It guarded the strategic route through the Llanberis Pass inland from Caernarfon toward the upper Conwy Valley and formed part of the defences of the medieval kingdom of Gwynedd. It is one of a group of mountain castles associated with Llywelyn, which is why a comparatively modest ruin occupies such a commanding rock.

  • Plan food, water and toilets in Llanberis before you walk up, as facilities are not confirmed at the castle itself.
  • Dogs on short leads are allowed on the ground-floor levels of the site.
  • Take a windproof layer; the knoll is exposed even when the village feels sheltered.
  • Combining the castle with a walk by Llyn Padarn makes an easy, rewarding outing from the village.
