Overview

About Llyn Padarn

Why stop

  • Mountain views, woodland, and slate heritage in one stop
  • A rewarding full-day base for walking or water activities

Heads up

  • Popular shore sections can feel busy in good weather
  • Deep water and uneven quarry paths require close attention
Llyn Padarn is a broad glacial lake beside Llanberis, with mountain slopes, woodland, and old slate workings all meeting at the water. It is roughly 800 acres in size, so the experience changes along the shore: one section feels like a village waterfront, another like a quiet woodland walk, and another opens toward the quarry country around Dinorwig.

Before you go

Best time to visit

Early morning or late afternoon usually gives the best light across the water and a calmer feel on the busier shore sections. Clear, still weather is ideal for reflections; after rain, the surrounding mountains can look especially dramatic, though paths become slick. Allow more time than the walking estimate if you want photographs, a railway ride, or a detour through the slate heritage sites. Waterproof layers and shoes with reliable grip are useful in every season.

Walk and access

The full circular walk is roughly 8 km and takes about 2.5 hours at a steady pace. Expect a mixture of surfaced paths, woodland, open shore, and rougher sections. Some parts are uneven, wet, or steep, and the old quarry landscape includes deep water and sudden drops. Stick to way-marked routes, keep children close, and do not enter ruined buildings or quarry structures.

The most practical base is Padarn Country Park near Llanberis. There are car parks at Gilfach Ddu, Dolbadarn, and Y Glyn, with public toilets and picnic areas concentrated around the main country-park facilities rather than evenly spaced around the whole lake. A café and other visitor services are close to the railway and village side, so this is an easy place to combine with a longer day in Llanberis.

More about Llyn Padarn

Nature and waterThe lake is a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its wildlife and geology.

The lake is a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its wildlife and geology. It is one of only a few natural Welsh habitats for Arctic charr, a cold-water fish left here after the last Ice Age, and it also supports rare aquatic plants including floating water-plantain. The lake is popular for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding, but the water is deep and cold. Bring appropriate equipment, check local safety advice before entering, and give boats and other water users plenty of room.

Why stopThe best reason to visit is the combination.

The best reason to visit is the combination. You can take in big views across the lake, follow a substantial shoreline circuit, and fold in the industrial story of Padarn Country Park. The Llanberis Lake Railway runs along the shore, while the ruins of Dolbadarn Castle are a memorable landmark above the eastern end.
