Overview
About Llanberis Lake Railway
Why stop
- A relaxed way to combine lake scenery with Welsh slate history
- Steam trains, castle, and mountain views in one ride
Heads up
- Weather and peak-season crowds can blunt the views
This is Eryri’s gentler railway experience: a narrow-gauge steam train that lets you take in Llyn Padarn, slate-quarry country, and the mountains without committing to a hike. The normal full journey is about five miles there and back and takes roughly an hour, making it an easy companion to a day in Llanberis or Padarn Country Park.

More about Llanberis Lake Railway
What you’ll seeThe main station is at Gilfach Ddu, beside the National Slate Museum and the old quarry…
The main station is at Gilfach Ddu, beside the National Slate Museum and the old quarry workshops. From there the line passes Dolbadarn Castle, crosses the short river at the edge of Llanberis, and runs out along the lake shore. The best scenery arrives beyond the wooded and quarried sections, when the train hugs the water and opens views across Llyn Padarn toward Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon).
A stop at Cei Llydan can turn the ride into a longer lakeside outing, with room for a picnic and a quieter look across the water. The Llanberis extension also makes it possible to combine the railway with the village’s cafés, shops, and other attractions. The railway follows the route of an older slate railway, and its compact steam locomotives were built for quarry work before being restored for visitors.
Practical adviceStart at Gilfach Ddu if you are driving.
- Start at Gilfach Ddu if you are driving. The pay-and-display Country Park car park also serves the slate museum and other attractions, so it is the most useful base for a first visit.
- The railway is seasonal, and service patterns vary. Check the current timetable before travelling, especially if you want the full lakeside journey or hope to break your trip at Cei Llydan.
- Weekdays and the shoulder seasons are usually calmer than the busiest summer weekends. Clear weather gives the strongest mountain views, while softer morning or late-afternoon light works best for photographs across the lake.
- Bring a waterproof layer even on a bright day. The train is exposed in places, and steam, smoke, and coal dust are part of the old-fashioned experience. Wheelchair spaces are available but limited, so contact the railway ahead of time. Toilets, including accessible facilities, are nearby in the Country Park.
