Pompolona Lodge

Overview

Pompolona Lodge is the second overnight stop on the guided Milford Track with Ultimate Hikes, tucked into beech forest and steep mountains deep inside the valley. It’s private (not a public hut) and only available to guided walkers, but within that world it’s the cushy midpoint: real beds, hot showers, and seriously good food—exactly what you want after a wet Fiordland day.

What makes it different

Compared to standard backcountry huts, this place is dialed. Expect flushing toilets, hot showers, a superb drying room, and a well‑run dining room serving breakfast, make‑your‑own lunches, and a proper dinner. There’s a small bar for wine and beer (expect higher prices), and generated electricity runs in the evenings until about 10 pm, with power back on early morning.

The lodge sits near Pompolona Creek amid dense temperate rainforest with big mountain walls all around—classic Fiordland drama out the windows. Heading out, you’ll cross the creek and quickly meet the start of the “Pompolona Staircase,” a famed uphill stretch that sets you up for the big day over Mackinnon Pass.

A note on history and conditions

Earlier iterations of Pompolona Lodge didn’t survive Fiordland’s volatility—an avalanche‑formed lake burst destroyed a previous building. The current lodge (the third) dates to the early 1980s. That backstory is a reminder: this is serious mountain country. Track conditions can be wet, muddy, and slick; plan for rain and follow your guides.

Wildlife

Birdlife along this stretch of track can include kea, tui, bellbirds, South Island robins, and fantails. You may also encounter nocturnal bats and the occasional introduced mammals, but birds are the main event.

Staying here: what to expect

• Access is on foot via the Milford Track; there’s no road or parking.
• Rooms are comfortable and well kept; some parties report private ensuite rooms alongside shared options.
• Evenings are social but efficient: dinner service, a bar that closes around 9 pm, and lights out when the generator shuts down about 10 pm.

You don’t pick dates around the lodge so much as book an Ultimate Hikes departure; Pompolona is typically your night two. Within the day, late‑afternoon light suits the valley views before the 10 pm power‑down, and early mornings are ideal for gearing up for Mackinnon Pass.

Is it worth it?

If you’re doing the guided Milford, absolutely—Pompolona is the sweet spot of comfort in the heart of Fiordland. If you’re walking independently, note you can’t stay here; book the DOC huts instead.
