The Loop

The Loop is the only switchback on the west side of Going-to-the-Sun Road. It marks the start of the narrow stretch cut into the mountainside, and the turn with the high peaks behind it makes a worthwhile pause if you're already making the drive. Parking is limited, so move on if the lot is full instead of trying to stop along the road. For a photo, frame the bend with the peaks; Heavens Peak is part of the view.

There's a shuttle stop, restroom, benches and interpretive exhibits. The Loop Trail also starts here, so hikers use the limited parking too. This is a quick road stop; the climb from the trailhead is a separate commitment.

The Loop Trail climbs 4.2 miles and 2,600 feet to Granite Park Chalet, where it meets the Highline Trail. That's a substantial uphill hike, not a short walk from the parking area. Decide whether you want the trail before you arrive, especially if you're counting on one of the few parking spaces.

Going-to-the-Sun Road is 50 miles long and was dedicated in 1933. For 12 miles, it was carved into steep mountainsides. The final route used fewer, broader turns than an early proposal, with a maximum grade of 6 percent instead of 8 percent. That larger design story makes this one west-side switchback stand out.

The alpine section is seasonal: it typically opens by late June and closes around the third Monday in October, sometimes earlier in bad weather. Between Avalanche Creek and Rising Sun, vehicles longer than 21 feet (including bumpers) or wider than 8 feet (including mirrors) are prohibited; vehicles over 10 feet high may have trouble heading west from Logan Pass to The Loop because of rock overhangs. Check current road status before planning the stop.
