Guide
West Tunnel is a vehicle tunnel cut through a steep cliff on the west side of Going-to-the-Sun Road. Its two observation windows make it a memorable part of the cross-park drive, but plan to pass through rather than stop here. No separate safe pullout or walking access was verified, so don't stop in the tunnel or on the roadway.
The openings look toward Heavens Peak and McDonald Creek, giving passengers a quick framed view of the landscape. The view is part of the passage, not a separate walk.
Laborers built the tunnel between 1926 and 1927, carving a vehicle route through the cliff. Going-to-the-Sun Road closes seasonally and winter weather can affect open sections, so check road status before planning a crossing through this stretch.
