Jimmy Creek: A Bush Break by the Wannon

Overview

About Jimmy Creek Campground

Why stop

  • Peaceful bush setting beside the upper Wannon River
  • Teddy Bear Gap Loop starts at camp

Heads up

  • Untreated seasonal water means you must carry drinking water
  • Limited phone reception
Jimmy Creek is a practical Southern Grampians base with a better setting than its basic facilities suggest. The campground sits in open eucalyptus woodland beside the upper Wannon River, with grassy sites, a picnic table, and the chance to watch kangaroos and wallabies move through camp. It is a good choice when you want a quieter night between Halls Gap and Dunkeld rather than a polished holiday park.

Before you go

Best time to go

The Teddy Bear Gap Loop starts from the campground and is about 7.4 km. A separate nearby car park provides access to a section of the Grampians Peaks Trail. For larger mountain walks and the headline lookouts, plan on driving rather than expecting a major attraction at the campground itself.

Spring brings the best chance of seeing wildflowers, while autumn and spring are comfortable for setting up camp and walking. In summer, start walks early and pack extra water; the clearing has sun as well as shade, and insects can be noticeable. The campground is most peaceful midweek. School holidays and public-holiday weekends are more likely to fill the sites, so book ahead and arrive with your supplies already packed. Late afternoon gives the eucalyptus trunks and surrounding ridge warmer light, while early morning is the better bet for quiet bird calls and wildlife.

There are 13 tent sites with adjacent vehicle parking, plus four drive-in sites for caravans and campervans and four for camper trailers, caravans, campervans, and larger tents. All sites are unpowered and allow up to six people. Designated fire pits have barbecue plates, and picnic tables are available. The toilets are non-flushing/pit toilets, and the bush shower is cold.

A seasonal water tank or tap may be available, but the water is not potable, so bring enough drinking and cooking water. Bring your own firewood, toilet paper, and rubbish bags: fires belong only in the designated fireplaces, and there is no rubbish collection. Dogs are not allowed in the national park.
