Overview

About MacKenzie Falls (Migunang wirab)

Why stop

  • Reliable flow even in dry weather

Heads up

  • A steep return on narrow steps to reach the base
MacKenzie Falls is one of Victoria's largest waterfalls and the only waterfall in Gariwerd that flows all year. Water drops over dark rock into a deep pool, throwing fine spray into the gorge. The upper cascades, stringybark forest, and layered rock walls make this a worthwhile stop even if you do not take on the base walk.

“You're coming up on MacKenzie Falls, and this is a stop I'd make time for, even if a steep walk isn't for you. The falls flow all year, dropping over dark rock into a deep pool and sending spray through the gorge.”

More about MacKenzie Falls (Migunang wirab)

Choose your walkBluff Lookout: The 1.9 km return Mackenzie Falls Lookout Walk is the easy option.
  • Bluff Lookout: The 1.9 km return Mackenzie Falls Lookout Walk is the easy option. Its sealed, wheelchair-friendly route leads through stringybark forest to a high view over the falls and multiple cascades in the gorge.
  • Base of the falls: The 2 km return walk is the close-up experience, but it is steep and includes about 260 narrow steps. Going down is straightforward for many visitors; climbing back out is the part that demands time and energy.
  • Broken Falls: Add the short 500 m return walk from the same precinct for an upper-falls view and a look at the Mackenzie River Gorge's striking rock formations.
Safety and practicalitiesSwimming is not permitted.

Swimming is not permitted. The pool is cold and deep, with strong currents and submerged objects. Rocks and steps can be slippery, and the precinct has steep terrain, unstable cliffs, and the possibility of falling limbs. Wear shoes with good grip, carry water for the stair climb, and stay on the formed routes.

The falls are popular, especially on weekends and holidays. Arrive early on a weekday for the best chance of a calmer visit. Recent rain usually means heavier flow and more spray, but it can also make the track and viewing rocks slick. Check the fire-danger forecast before setting out because the precinct closes on Catastrophic Fire Danger days.

Extend the visitFit walkers can continue along the Mackenzie River Walk toward Fish Falls.

Fit walkers can continue along the Mackenzie River Walk toward Fish Falls. The longer route can involve water crossings, rock hopping, and scrambling, so it is a different proposition from the short lookout walks. Watch the sky for wedge-tailed eagles circling above the river gorge.
