Before you go

Best time to go

Use Wannon Crossing as a quiet overnight base for the southern Grampians. A short drive connects it with Mount Abrupt and Mount Sturgeon, while Halls Gap is about 35 km away. The access road is sealed and suitable for all vehicles, but the campground is small and first-come, so an early arrival gives you the best chance of choosing a site when demand is high.

Late afternoon is the better time for warm light across the clearing and the mountain ridge. Morning is cooler and usually gives the most peaceful feel. This is a good stop for campers who value a calm bush setting and self-sufficiency; it will feel too sparse if you need powered sites, potable water, or full-service campground facilities.

Wannon Crossing is a small riverside bush campground beside the Wannon River, set in a grassy clearing among dense eucalyptus forest. The attraction is the quiet setting rather than a big day-use sight: you get a simple base with mountain views through the trees and easy access to the southern Grampians.

  • There are seven unpowered sites: six are for tents only, while one drive-in site suits a camper trailer, caravan, campervan, or larger tent. Vehicle parking sits beside the tent sites.
  • Facilities are deliberately basic: a non-flush toilet, picnic tables, and designated fireplaces with barbecue plates. Fires belong only in those fireplaces.
  • The tank and tap are not for drinking and the water supply is seasonal. Bring all drinking water, your own firewood, and bags for rubbish because there is no collection service.
  • Dogs and generators are not permitted. Leave the place tidy and keep to the campground's established areas.
