Overview

About The Balconies

Why stop

  • Huge valley panorama after an easy walk
  • Distinctive overhanging sandstone platforms

Heads up

  • Popular sunsets can make the shared car park busy
  • Exposed cliff edges and little shelter in poor weather
The Balconies is one of the Grampians' easiest big-view walks. A gentle gravel track through stringybark forest leads to fenced viewing platforms on overhanging sandstone cliffs, with broad views across Victoria Valley and the Victoria Range. The layered rock shelves are the draw here, not just the panorama, and they give the lookout a stronger sense of place than a standard roadside viewpoint.

Before you go

Best time to go

Misty mornings and sunset are the most atmospheric times to photograph the valley and sandstone. Spring adds native wildflowers and birdlife to the forest. This is a popular, low-effort walk, so early morning or a weekday is the best bet for a quieter track and easier parking. In thick mist the distant view can disappear, but the nearby rock formations still make the walk worthwhile.

More about The Balconies

The walkThe return walk is about 2.2 km and usually takes around an hour at an easy pace.

The return walk is about 2.2 km and usually takes around an hour at an easy pace. It starts from the shared Reeds Lookout and The Balconies car park and follows a well-formed track with a slight incline. The surface is generally manageable for families, prams, and many visitors using mobility aids, although uneven patches and the final lookout area can still require assistance. Reeds Lookout is a separate, worthwhile stop from the same car park.

Practicalities and safetyStay on the track and behind the barriers.

Stay on the track and behind the barriers. Slippery rocks, unstable cliffs, and falling branches are real hazards around the lookout, especially after wet or windy weather. Wear shoes with a secure sole and bring water. Dogs are not allowed in the park here, and fires, camping, and bicycles are prohibited. Keep children close to the fenced platforms and do not climb onto the rock ledges.
