Overview

About Reeds Lookout

Why stop

  • Huge valley panorama from a very short walk

Heads up

  • Sunset crowds can make the small viewpoint feel busy
Reeds Lookout is the quick, high-payoff viewpoint on the western side of the Grampians. From the rocky summit, the view opens across the Victoria Valley, with the Victoria Range, Serra Range, Lake Wartook and the Mount Difficult Range layered beyond it. The concrete fire tower on the outcrop gives the place a distinctive silhouette and makes the outlook feel more like a mountain summit than a roadside stop.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Sunset brings warm light across the ranges and is the most popular time to visit, so the small viewpoint can feel busy. For a quieter stop, go on a weekday, arrive well before sunset, or come early in the day. Mist can make the valley especially atmospheric in the morning, while clear, dry conditions give the longest views.

If you stay for dusk, bring a torch for the walk back and allow time to drive the mountain road carefully in the dark. The surrounding woodland may also turn up kangaroos, wallabies, emus or native birds around the quieter edges of the road. Watch from a distance and never feed wildlife.

More about Reeds Lookout

What to expectThe shared Reeds and Balconies car park leads to a 100-metre return walk that takes about 10…

The shared Reeds and Balconies car park leads to a 100-metre return walk that takes about 10 minutes. The main path is well formed and short, but it climbs steeply enough to feel like a real uphill push. The fenced viewing area is the easiest place to take in the panorama. A rougher rocky section beside the fence reaches another lookout point with a board showing the direction and distance to major landmarks.

The main path is described as suitable for prams and wheelchairs, although the steep grade and uneven rocky section beyond the fenced area are less comfortable. Stay behind barriers and away from unstable edges, especially when the rocks are wet.

Make it a two-stop visitReeds Lookout and The Balconies start from the same car park.

Reeds Lookout and The Balconies start from the same car park. Reeds is the better choice for a broad, immediate panorama and sunset, while The Balconies adds a gentle walk to cliff-edge rock platforms above the Victoria Valley. The pair makes an efficient half-hour stop, or a longer break if you linger for photographs.
