Guide
The Shrine of the Ages is a multipurpose auditorium near Market Plaza in Grand Canyon Village. The park, Grand Canyon Conservancy and community groups use it for concerts, talks, cultural programs and ranger presentations. Go in when a scheduled program interests you; otherwise, it works as a short stop on a Village walk. Interior access is tied to events or services, so check the current park calendar or ask at the Visitor Center before going inside.
The idea for an interfaith chapel dates to 1917. The Shrine of the Ages Chapel Corporation formed in 1952 with Catholic, Jewish and Protestant representatives, and the park approved a shared place of worship. Architect Harold E. Wagoner drew on Southwestern kiva forms; park design guidelines excluded towers and specific religious symbols. The finished building also became a venue for broader park and community events.
The first proposal placed the chapel on the canyon rim, with a sweeping curved, multistory window behind the altar. Funding limits and debate over the rim location sent the project back for a redesign beside Grand Canyon Pioneer Cemetery. The building was completed by 1970; the dramatic window belonged to the unbuilt proposal, so the Shrine is an event venue rather than an overlook.
