“You're approaching Loch Ard Gorge, where two limestone walls enclose a sandy inlet with a narrow opening to the sea. Give this precinct about an hour if you want more than a quick look.”

More about Broken Head Lookout

Add it to a longer Loch Ard visitBroken Head Lookout is a coastal headland viewpoint in Port Campbell National Park’s western…

Broken Head Lookout is a coastal headland viewpoint in Port Campbell National Park’s western Loch Ard Gorge precinct. It suits a longer stop along the linked trails; this is an extra walk to a view, not a roadside pull-in. The signed Living on the Edge route to Broken Head is 1.8 km return from the Poombeeyt Koontapool car park, over crushed rock and bitumen with a gentle dip and climb.

Look along the coastSherbrook Creek Beach lies west of the headland, with Mutton Bird Island offshore to the east.

Sherbrook Creek Beach lies west of the headland, with Mutton Bird Island offshore to the east. The view is about the shape of the coastline: pale layered limestone, broad rock shelves and open water. Waves, wind and rain have carved this limestone coast into cliffs, arches and stacks over thousands of years. Leave a strip of rock shelf in the foreground to make the coast’s layers show up in a photo.
