Gibson Steps

Gibson Steps is a clifftop lookout and a steep route down to Gibson Beach, on the Great Ocean Road near Princetown. Two limestone stacks called Gog and Magog rise just offshore. They’re often grouped with the Twelve Apostles in photos, but they’re separate features. From the beach, the cliffs tower above you; the accessible lookout gives you a good view without taking the descent. The beach is not safely reachable in every tide or swell, and rock can fall from the cliffs, so check conditions and keep well clear of the cliff base.

From the car park, it’s about 50 metres out and back to the clifftop platform. Reaching the sand means taking 86 steps plus a ramped walkway; give the stop 30–45 minutes if you plan to go down and look around. The steps can be tiring on the way back up, and visitors report that they can be slippery. A designated accessible parking space serves the accessible lookout, but the beach route is a different commitment.

Visitors report that the small car park can fill. Another option is to park at the Twelve Apostles and walk the Great Ocean Walk section to Gibson Steps: 2.2 km return, about 60–80 minutes, through a safe underpass under the Great Ocean Road. That narrow gravel route is not advised for prams, wheelchairs or mobility scooters. Use marked parking areas; parking on the Great Ocean Road or beside a solid yellow line is illegal.

The steps follow an older path used by the Kirrae Whurrong people of the Eastern Maar Nation. Local settler Hugh Gibson later worked on that traditional access and carved steps into the cliff; the stairs, rather than the beach or offshore stacks, are what the place is named for.

The cliff line reaches about 70 metres. Near the top of the steps, red-brown Hesse clay about 3 million years old sits directly on marine limestone about 11 million years old. The missing eight million years are a visible break in the local record, linked to uplift and erosion. The upper limestone’s yellow colour comes from a small amount of iron oxide; lower grey layers contain more clay minerals and organic material.

From the platform, look out to Gog and Magog and along the exposed Southern Ocean shore. If the sea allows, the beach puts the rock layers, surf and cliff scale much closer. That’s the stronger place for a low, wide photo with wet sand in the foreground, but the view is still worthwhile from above when the water makes the descent a bad idea.
