“You're approaching Loch Ard Gorge, where two limestone walls enclose a sandy inlet with a narrow opening to the sea. Give this precinct about an hour if you want more than a quick look.”

Thunder Cave is a named sea cave and lookout on the western side of the Loch Ard Gorge precinct. Southern Ocean waves surge into its limestone opening and can boom against the rock; in calm conditions, the sound may be barely there. It’s a worthwhile coastal stop when the surf is active, but the cave itself is a modest feature rather than a full afternoon outing.

The listed walk is 1.1 km return on a sealed path from Poombeeyt Koontapool car park. That western lot isn’t suitable for long vehicles or caravans; use the main Loch Ard car park and allow for the extra walk. There are no toilets in the precinct.

The opening is the remains of a sea cave whose roof collapsed through marine erosion, leaving the open cliff hollow you see today. The coast’s soft limestone keeps changing under the Southern Ocean’s waves and weather.

This is one stop in a larger chain of Loch Ard lookouts and coastal walks; allow about an hour for the precinct if you want to see more than the cave. From the viewpoint, frame the dark opening with the pale, layered cliff. White water in the inlet helps show the scale, though the sea may be quiet when you arrive.
